Battery storage explained
Coupled with solar photovoltaic (PV) systems or wind turbines, batteries store energy when renewable production is high, and your homes demand is low. Batteries then release the stored energy when demand is high.
Using a battery storage system at home
Investing in home battery storage may help you reduce your electricity bill. However, the installation costs can be high, so this needs to be weighed up against any potential savings.
Using batteries with solar PV in Jersey won't materially reduce your carbon footprint because grid-supplied power is already virtually decarbonised.
Battery storage in the future
Battery storage will undoubtedly play a part in Jersey's future energy system as local renewable generation increases. We're already trialling vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology that uses electric vehicle batteries as storage.
The extent to which we deploy larger-scale storage will need to take account of our access to large, on-demand volumes of cost-effective renewables from France.
Tell us about your installation
You must notify Jersey Electricity in writing before you install solar PV panels or battery storage systems.
We call this type of equipment embedded generation, and you can find installation advice about it in our Trade area.
