The Energy Blog Third public Evolve rapid EV charger unveiled at Red Houses

50kW unit follows installation at Grouville and can fully charge most EVs in under an hour

We have this week unveiled our third public electric vehicle rapid charger at Red Houses, St Brelade. It is the second rapid charger in a week to become operational, quickly following the installation at Long Beach, Grouville, as we continue investing in the Island's EV charging infrastructure.

Like the rapids at Long Beach and the Powerhouse, the 50kW, charger is accessible using an Evolve card, debit or credit card, and is capable fully charging the average EV in well under one hour and for many vehicles 80% of capacity in 25 minutes.

JE Director of Commercial Services Peter Cadiou said: ‘Our expansion of the Island’s public charging infrastructure this year in particular is in support of the Government’s carbon reduction ambitions for Jersey. Road transport accounts for around a third of the Island’s overall emissions and we see the electrification of road transport, along with a big shift from heating with fossil fuels, as essential steps if Jersey is to have any chance of achieving its aim to become carbon neutral by 2030.

‘We have progressed groundworks on numerous charger locations during the past few weeks but delivery of the charger units from the UK has been subject to delays due to the impact of Coronavirus. This has now been resolved and we will soon see further expansion of the Evolve public charging network. Our aim is to have at least 75 Evolve public charging bays with a combination of 20kW dual fast chargers and 50kW rapids by the end of this year.’

Before the COVID-19 lockdown, the total number of pure EVs registered in Jersey stood at 667, an increase of almost 100 in four months, while the number of hybrid vehicles rose to just under 1,032. The number of commercial electric vans had more than doubled in the past two years from 52 in 2017 to 124. The Red Houses rapid brings the total number of public Evolve charging bays in Jersey to 41, plus two dedicated EVie points on the Parade.
