Borrow a thermal imaging camera
Saving energy is important to our customers and it’s important to us. We want to help you reduce bills, improve the comfort of your home, and reduce environmental impact.
We're loaning thermal imaging cameras out to JE customers for free over winter to allow you to assess areas of heat loss in your home.
The cameras connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth and show you where heat is escaping from your home using different colours to show different temperatures. These cameras work best in the winter when the outside is colder and the inside of your home is warmer, as the difference in temperature is easier to identify – and better in the early morning/evening when it tends to be colder outside.
Our guide offers information on how to block heat loss.
Simple to use cameras
FLIR manufacture thermal imaging equipment for all types of applications. The FLIR ONE edge pro is user-friendly and suitable for DIY at-home use, making it perfect to try out in your home!
Draughts and heat loss makes a home less comfortable and increases energy loss and energy bills. Flir found that the average UK home wastes £363 worth of heat through poor insulation.
The camera connects to your smartphone using Bluetooth and images are saved to your phone for easy sharing.

Find out what customers think of the thermal imaging camera
We've received some fantastic feedback from those who have used the thermal imaging cameras.
Here’s what they had to say.
JE employee
"It was super easy to set up and use, and helped me to make sure that some of the insulation upgrades that have been done to our house have actually worked and helped with our energy efficiency."
Kayleigh
"The whole family had fun using the camera - seeking out cold spots, troubleshooting.... and seeing what we and our pets look like as a thermal image! The camera and app are really easy to use and gave some great insights into where we can improve our energy efficiency in our home."
Dan
"Thank you again for allowing me to borrow the thermal camera. It was extremely useful and, more than anything, allowed us to confirm that some of the measures we put in place over the summer (more loft insulation and repairing a few door seals) had actually worked. It also allowed us to spot where insulation in our loft needed a little bit of movement, and we spotted a few small air gaps in downlighters, which was allowing heat to escape. The app was straightforward to use, and the photos were simply saved straight to the camera in both photo and video form so that we could do a simple audit of our home in around 30 minutes."

FAQs
How does a thermal imaging camera work?
Thermal cameras record the temperature of various objects in the frame and then assign each temperature a shade of colour, allowing you to see how much heat it's radiating compared to objects around it.
Colder temperatures are often blue, purple, or green whereas warmer temperatures can be assigned a shade of red, orange, or yellow.
How do I use the thermal imaging camera?
- Make sure the camera is charged (fully charged = LED strips lit up)
- Install the FLIR ONE app on your phone from your preferred app store
- Turn the FLIR ONE Edge camera on by holding the On/Off button until the LEDs start flashing, indicating that the camera is booting up. It takes about 20 seconds for the camera to start.
- Attach the FLIR ONE edge camera to the back of your mobile device by pulling out the extendable arm until the camera is clamped around the device
- Start the FLIR ONE app on your mobile device
- The FLIR ONE app will guide you to setup permissions from the app and to connect the camera with the mobile device
- To turn off the FLIR ONE edge camera, press and hold the On/Off button until the LEDs turn off.
You should be able to see an array of colours on your phone screen, pointing the camera at areas in your home identifies areas of high heat loss.
- From inside your home, darker, cooler spots show where cool air is coming in.
- From outside your home, reds, whites, yellows, and warmer colours show where heat is leaking out.
Why do the thermal images not match up with my visible image?
The camera can be used in MSX mode (multispectral dynamic imaging), which adds visible light to thermal images in real time for greater clarity, embedding edge and outline detail onto thermal readings. You may need to adjust the MXS alignment to make sure the edges from the visible light camera aligns with the thermal image. Select the MXS alignment icon and slide the marker until the visible edges in your picture align with the thermal patterns.
There is more support with this on the FLIR ONE app in ‘Help’ > ‘How to use’ > ‘FLIR ONE Edge Pro’ > ‘MSX’.
Why do I have images saved on my phone that aren't mine?
The FLIR ONE app comes with sample images to give examples of what you can assess in your own home. These may save automatically to your phone depending on your phone settings, and they can be deleted from your phone.
How do I interpret the images taken with the camera? How do I know what to do after using the camera?
With colder temperatures exhibiting lighter colours (blue-ish) on the thermal imaging cameras, it is fairly straightforward to see where heat loss is occurring. Visit our guide for further support on how to interpret your images

How long does the scheme run for?
The cameras work best when outside temperatures are much lower than inside (with heating on), so the pilot will run in Winter 2023, we will stop sending out cameras in March. Depending on feedback and uptake from the pilot, the cameras will be available for booking again next winter.

Why is JE loaning out thermal imaging cameras?
Increased cost of energy is just one of the pressures on islanders cost of living, JE want to support customers to reduce their energy consumption and bills by assessing areas of high heat loss. In many instances, the heat loss identified can be reduced or blocked which will reduce energy consumption.
