About embedded generators

Embedded generators (EmGs) are connected to your electricity supply and provide electricity for onsite use. They also have the capability to export electricity back to the grid.

JE provides the remainder of the electricity demand to the site, including a backup service when an EmG is not operational.

Types of generator

Typical examples of EmGs that may qualify for our Green Export Guarantee tariff include:

  • Wind turbines
  • Photovoltaic (solar panels)

Embedded generators must be:

  • Up to a facility size of 70kWp 3 Phase / 20kWp Single Phase
  • Approved by Jersey Electricity under Engineering Recommendations G83/2 or G59/3, depending on the rating of the generator
  • Connected in parallel to our network

Installations above 70kWp will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Typical kW peak refers to the maximum rating of the EmG.

FAQs

What is the Green Export Guarantee?

The Green Export Guarantee is how JE purchases electricity exported from small renewable generators on the Island (for example solar panels on a roof). The Green Export Guarantee tariff pays a set price for all electricity exported from an applicable generator, the rate is published on our website.

What is the Green Export Guarantee eligibility?

The Green Export Guarantee is for all renewable generators below 70kW (70kW is approximately 100-250 solar panels). There may be different rates for domestic and commercial customers. Other requirements, such as the correct metering and a certified installation are applicable.

How is the price set?

The tariff rate is set to reflect the value of the exported power to JE, this is equivalent to the offset cost of buying electricity from France and importing it through the interconnector. As most of the generation is from solar panels, the rate is weighted towards the value of electricity in the middle of the day and in summer.

In general the export will follow other JE tariffs (e.g. the domestic supply tariff) but may vary sometimes, especially if the price of electricity in the winter evenings increases more relative to when the Green Export Guarantee volume occurs.

The tariff will be recalculated annually and will reflect a fair and reasonable price in line with the commitments in our Customer Charter.

Will there be future changes to the Green Export Guarantee?

We reserve the right to make reasonable changes to the terms of the Green Export Guarantee and will endeavour to ensure any changes are within the principles set out in our Customer Charter of being fair, secure, reliable and sustainable.

STANDARD EXPORT AGREEMENT

This agreement relates to the supply of electricity by you to us as a customer.

Subject to us approving (in our unfettered discretion) your generation facility and your request for an export meter, we will install and commission an export meter at your Premises. The installation of the export meter may incur charges, which we will communicate with you prior to installation.
We will obtain readings from your export meter periodically and based on the kWh exported by you in accordance with those readings your regular bill will be credited in arrears. The applicable tariffs per kWh will be those published by us from time to time on our website – www.jec.co.uk.
