I’m an apprentice craft person for underground cable jointing within JE’s Service Delivery team.
The apprenticeship role appealed to me as I wanted to challenge myself in learn new skills in a thriving industry with real career progression. I was excited about the opportunity to grow within a company with a long-established history in Jersey. Within JE there is plenty of opportunity to progress and move roles. I used to work in the stores department and I wanted to change. Every step of the way JE gives you the encouragement and support you need to achieve your career ambitions. JE was really encouraging when I said I wanted to progress down this new and exciting career path.
I start my day at the yard (La Collette Distribution Building), grab a coffee and have a quick chat with my colleagues before we receive our jobs for the day. I am then paired up with a jointing colleague and we head out to the site. Once there, I help out by being a jointer’s mate, which involves taking equipment and tools to the pit, collecting equipment from the van, or preparing the cable. I’m always busy and the team will always answer any questions I may have.
As apprentices do real jobs in genuine work environments, you gain diverse skills that will help you throughout your career and build your confidence, such as teamwork, effective communication, and problem-solving. It’s so much more than just a qualification and job experience. Every team member is made to feel valued and motivated by a vision of the bigger picture. I see myself as an integral part of the company who has helped contribute to the growth and success of the operation. I feel inspired to continue developing my skills and knowledge so I can take on more responsibility and progress to becoming a trainee electrical engineer.
