I’m an apprentice craft person for underground cable jointing within JE’s Service Delivery team.
The apprenticeship role appealed to me as I wanted to challenge myself in learn new skills in a thriving industry with real career progression. I was excited about the opportunity to grow within a company with a long-established history in Jersey. Within JE there is plenty of opportunity to progress and move roles. I used to work in the stores department and I wanted to change. Every step of the way JE gives you the encouragement and support you need to achieve your career ambitions. JE was really encouraging when I said I wanted to progress down this new and exciting career path.
I start my day at the yard (La Collette Distribution Building), grab a coffee and have a quick chat with my colleagues before we receive our jobs for the day. I am then paired up with a jointing colleague and we head out to the site. Once there, I help out by being a jointer’s mate, which involves taking equipment and tools to the pit, collecting equipment from the van, or preparing the cable. I’m always busy and the team will always answer any questions I may have.
As apprentices do real jobs in genuine work environments, you gain diverse skills that will help you throughout your career and build your confidence, such as teamwork, effective communication, and problem-solving. It’s so much more than just a qualification and job experience. Every team member is made to feel valued and motivated by a vision of the bigger picture. I see myself as an integral part of the company who has helped contribute to the growth and success of the operation. I feel inspired to continue developing my skills and knowledge so I can take on more responsibility and progress to becoming a trainee electrical engineer.

No, after completing A Levels, I obtained an Art Foundation Diploma, followed by a year of university studying BA (Hons) Film & Video.
A temporary position in the Imagination Toy Department during the Christmas period.
A position in the retail sector seemed like the right fit, given some previous experience in customer facing roles within hospitality. Friends had positive things to say about JE and the company's reputation was appealing. While the temporary nature of the job initially suited the situation, it ultimately opened doors to other opportunities - and now, over a decade later, I'm still here!
Working at JE has led to the development of numerous valuable skills, both professionally and personally. Confidence, communication and self-improvement have all grown during this time. JE has a strong learning culture, providing plenty of opportunities to grow through hands on experience and formal training. Additional skills have been gained through various courses accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing and Chartered Management Institute.
JE has been highly supportive of career growth and development. After several years as a Retail Sales Adviser, I was promoted to Senior Sales Adviser, where I took on the responsibility of managing product ranging and merchandising of the Cook Shop department. I was later promoted to Sales & Marketing Assistant, where I was part of the office based team involved in the rebranding of 'JE Retail' into the 'Powerhouse.' Now, as a Category Manager, I oversee our product ranges and maintain relationships with suppliers, ensuring alignment with customer needs. I also support marketing strategies and work to improve store performance and profitability through effective merchandising and data driven decisions.
Focus on what inspired you to choose your career, put in consistent effort and aim for continuous development. But always remember that practising self-care and maintaining a healthy work-life balance will help you to be the best version of yourself, both personally and professionally!
