Have you worked at JE since you left full-time education?
After I returned from University, I had some temporary roles in different industries including Jersey Telecom before joining JE to launch my professional career.
What was your first role at JE?
I saw an opportunity for a CAD Technician in the Building Services team and went for it!
What made you go for that role?
I was confident that JE would help me develop my CAD skills and equip me with the professional training to become a Building Services Engineer. I was later offered an opportunity within Energy Division and gained invaluable experience in diverse areas of the business. I’m proud to say I am now a Senior Asset Management and Distribution Control Engineer.
How have your skills developed during your time with JE?
JE has always supported me in my career development and allowed me to progress up the professional ladder at my own pace. I’ve had incredible opportunities to train towards technical qualifications and received guidance from experienced mentors who encouraged me every step of the way. I’ve now advanced to a senior position in the business and there’s still room for career growth.
How has JE supported your career decisions?
They understood what I needed for my personal development, as well as professional. They supported my decision to take a career break and travel the world. I came back to a warm welcome and learned to appreciate that Jersey really is a wonderful place to live and work.

What made you choose JE and Jersey?
I learned everything I could about JE before joining the company. I was inspired by its vision to build a zero carbon future and commitment to powering thousands of island homes and businesses through sustainable energy. I felt that this was a community-centred company with a purpose and it made me want to be part of the JE family. I was drawn to Jersey for its natural beauty, family-friendly environment and warm community. It was a life-changing step and I’ve never looked back!
How did JE support your move to Jersey?
JE supported my move to Jersey from the moment I received the job offer right through to moving to my new home and settling down in the island. A professional relocation agent helped me through all the process and answered all my questions and concerns which made my life much easier. For someone moving country of residency for the first time, this was greatly appreciated.
What specific actions or behaviours from your colleagues or leadership have made you feel valued and included at work since you relocated?
The whole JE team made me feel welcomed and valued right from day one. There’s a strong sense that we’re all working together as one high performance team towards shared goals. My colleagues are motivated, inspiring people and there’s a positive atmosphere throughout the business that helps us work more effectively. My team and I enjoy a close working relationship, make time to chat to each other during the day and help each other overcome challenges and celebrate our achievements.
What do you like about your role?
I initially joined the energy division as an electrical engineer. Soon afterwards, I was promoted to Lead Drawing Officer and ArcGIS engineer. This new role helped me expand my knowledge and expertise in the field. I am helping to remap our energy infrastructure using new technologies and high performance software. I have been instrumental in the migration to new digital systems which is a vital component of JE’s net zero strategy. The work I do is important and I have tangible part to play in building Jersey’s carbon zero future. I’m hugely passionate about what I do and I’m grateful to JE for the opportunity to prove what I’m capable of.
How have your skills developed during your time with JE?
I joined the Energy Division during a major time of transition to a new advanced software called ArcGIS Pro. Migrating to this new system was an exciting challenge and it rapidly expanded my digital skills and technical knowledge. It provided me with the opportunity to rigorously test the new system to make sure it was fully integrated into every operational facet of the business. I also took the lead in ensuring that key stakeholders were fully trained in the new system to facilitate a smooth transition.
How has JE supported your career decisions?
JE has been hugely supportive. After getting married in Jersey and having my first child, JE supported me with a flexible schedule that helps me balance my work life and duties as a Mum! There are so many JE skills programs in place to provide you with professional training and relevant courses to increase your knowledge and help you evolve within the business.
What advice would you give someone just starting out in their chosen career?
Whatever path you decide to follow in your career, make sure you do it with passion, loyalty, love and a positive mindset. Don’t lose sight of your personal career ambitions, but also remember to grow and develop together as part of a team working to improve the business.

Have you worked at JE since you left full-time education?
I completed my GCSE’s at Le Rocquier School and attained good grades in art and science. I was faced with the daunting task of deciding what move to make next. JE had put an ad in the JEP for a number of apprenticeships. I thought with my good grade in physics and a passion for RC electric cars I might have a chance and applied. I was successful and two weeks after leaving school I started with JE.
What was your first role at JE?
My first role was a C&I Apprentice.
What made you go for that role?
JE gave all the apprentices the chance to spend some time in all the departments in the Energy Division. This gave a feel for the work in each department and I liked the Control and Instrumentation Department as it was similar to the wiring and soldering of electronic parts I did with my RC car hobby.
How have your skills developed during your time with JE?
My skills in C&I developed over time to enable me to work on all the systems and plant within the power station. I was also trained to operate the plant as well as maintain it. This gave me a very broad skill set.
How has JE supported your career decisions?
JE has been very supportive and have enabled me to make a career move in to a management position. They have provided a lot of courses to make the move possible including a distance learning course with Teesside University.
Finally, what advice would you give someone just starting out in their chosen career?
Embrace all the training you are given and ask as many questions as you can. Above all enjoy it!

What was your first role at JE?
My journey with JE started over two decades ago as a CAD Technician in the Drawing Office at La Collette. This involved preparing CAD engineering drawings and carrying out site surveys on substation and cable installations. I learned a great deal and gained a wealth of technical knowledge.
What made you go for that role?
It was strongly aligned with my previous industry experience and I could see it was a unique opportunity to expand into professional areas I was interested in.
How have your skills developed during your time with JE?
While in the Drawing Office, I worked closely with the Construction and Maintenance Department Engineers and I discovered there were other exciting opportunities within the company. I was encouraged to take professional training and more responsibility and I developed into a dual role as Technical Contracts Administrator. JE supported me while I studied for a Bachelor of Science and I successfully gained my honours degree. This was all achieved through distance learning and period release while gaining hands-on experience at the company. I moved from the Drawing Office to the Construction Department where I trained to become a Senior Authorised Engineer. I rose to the challenge of major construction projects where I installed and commissioned substations and oversaw customer supplies. From the Construction Department I moved to the Maintenance Department to develop into my current role of Maintenance Engineer.
How has JE supported your career decisions?
JE has invested in my professional development and encouraged me to advance within the company. They empowered me make my own career decisions to find the right pathway for me.
Finally, what advice would you give someone just starting out in their chosen career?
Be open to the different opportunities that may be presented with your chosen career and don’t be afraid to make choices. Try different things. Have the confidence to give anything a go. It might be just what you’re searching for!

Have you worked at JE since you left full-time education?
I joined JE as part of the Power Academy bursary scheme and after some work experience, I was invited to join while studying a relevant degree programme. I worked at JE throughout University and in my final year I was fortunate to be offered a role as graduate engineer.
What was your first role at JE?
My first role was a work experience placement in the Project Trident programme when I was just 15 years old. I was a little wet behind the ears then and mostly shadowing the engineers, but it sparked the huge interest I have in engineering and certainly led me on the path to where I am today.
What made you go for that role?
I was inspired by a visit to the Power Station. A friend saw the bursary scheme advertised along with a tour of the station - not to mention a free buffet - we were quickly sold! John Duquemin led the tour around the Power Station and I was fascinated by it. Soon afterwards, I took the initiative to ask if I could do some work experience there and the team were delighted for me to get involved. I haven’t looked back since.
How have your skills developed during your time with JE?
I’ve learned a huge amount from the time I have spent with JE. I’ve been given access to training opportunities and learning forums and received the support I needed to attain vocational qualifications to enhance my technical skills and progress within the company. I’ve also had the chance to work alongside inspiring, talented people who helped shape my career under the mentorship of experienced colleagues. Experience is the really the path to career development and I’ve gained a huge amount from my 14 years at JE. I’ve overcome technical challenges, solved complex problems and learned quickly from my own mistakes in a supportive environment. I’ve learned to perceive better solutions and continually look for ways to optimise what we do. As well as developing as an engineer, my leadership skills have also come to the fore. I have been privileged to train as a Living Leader Programme presenter which is rolled out to the whole company. This has given me the opportunity to improve my public speaking skills and learn to actively listen to my colleagues and confront difficult challenges. I’m continuing to build and grow my leadership potential alongside my technical passions.
How has JE supported your career decisions?
I feel incredibly fortunate that my career has progressed the way it has. JE helped me learn the practical side of engineering while supporting me to study the theory, and then gave me the platform to develop that experience in the real world. I have progressively been given more responsibility throughout my time in the company and been given projects outside the normal scope of the confines of my role. This has meant I’ve continually learned new skills and expanded my knowledge. This wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for the support I received from the people around me in this process. We are lucky to have a motivated team who want to improve and progress and enable and support others to do the same.
Finally, what advice would you give someone just starting out in their chosen career?
Make your own luck. I’m a big believer in individuals taking responsibility for their own futures and putting themselves in the way of opportunities so they can be in exactly the right place when the opportunity arises. Create your own opportunities and identify influential people and study them. Keep asking questions!

Tell us about yourself
I’m an apprentice craft person for underground cable jointing within JE’s Service Delivery team.
What inspired you to start your apprenticeship?
The apprenticeship role appealed to me as I wanted to challenge myself in learn new skills in a thriving industry with real career progression. I was excited about the opportunity to grow within a company with a long-established history in Jersey. Within JE there is plenty of opportunity to progress and move roles. I used to work in the stores department and I wanted to change. Every step of the way JE gives you the encouragement and support you need to achieve your career ambitions. JE was really encouraging when I said I wanted to progress down this new and exciting career path.
Tell us about a typical day
I start my day at the yard (La Collette Distribution Building), grab a coffee and have a quick chat with my colleagues before we receive our jobs for the day. I am then paired up with a jointing colleague and we head out to the site. Once there, I help out by being a jointer’s mate, which involves taking equipment and tools to the pit, collecting equipment from the van, or preparing the cable. I’m always busy and the team will always answer any questions I may have.
What do you enjoy about the apprentice scheme?
As apprentices do real jobs in genuine work environments, you gain diverse skills that will help you throughout your career and build your confidence, such as teamwork, effective communication, and problem-solving. It’s so much more than just a qualification and job experience. Every team member is made to feel valued and motivated by a vision of the bigger picture. I see myself as an integral part of the company who has helped contribute to the growth and success of the operation. I feel inspired to continue developing my skills and knowledge so I can take on more responsibility and progress to becoming a trainee electrical engineer.
