Build your knowledge with experienced professionals

Our experienced engineers will work with you to ensure any relevance to your role to your studies is focussed on. You will be given responsibility to manage your own learning whilst being actively supported by mentors.

Our bursary scheme offers students £2,000 to put towards their studies and four weeks of paid work experience at our offices at the heart of it all.

    How did you find out about JE's bursary scheme and what encouraged you to apply?

    I was highly recommended to the bursary scheme by a friend who was already part of the program. At the time I was in my first year at Newcastle University and actively searching for job opportunities for the upcoming summer. The scheme aligned perfectly with my studies, which focused on power networks and alternating current power and conversion. The financial support and guaranteed paid work experience offered by the bursary scheme were great incentives. They allowed me to prioritise my studies and reduce the time spent worrying about finances and searching for work placements during term time.

    Tell us about some of the projects you have worked on.

    During my time at JE, two particularly exciting projects have stood out. The first involved addressing partial discharge (breakdown of insulating material) at the Western Primary site near Jersey Airport. We discovered a partial discharge issue on one of the newly installed bushings, which was an issue we needed to resolve quickly. This project provided invaluable insights into how JE’s engineering professionals tackle problems, from initial reporting to brainstorming and finally resolution and review. Another noteworthy project I participated in focused on detecting and repairing a leaking underground oil-insulated cable. This required an understanding of cable insulation, advanced fault detection methodologies and the principles of fluid dynamics. Working with an oil-insulated system was especially interesting, given its crucial role in efficient power transmission within modern power systems.

    How does your experience at JE support your studies and future plans?

    My time at JE has been the perfect supplement to my academic journey, bridging the gap between theory and practice. The hands-on experience has provided me with a great understanding of power generation, transmission and distribution dynamics. It’s shed light on abstract theories so I can see how balancing, frequency control and system reliability are vital to operational efficiency. These experiences have provided me with a much better framework for making the right career choices. The mentors I've had have been very helpful at breaking down complex systems into digestible concepts and encouraged me to research further in areas I was interested in. The financial support from the bursary has also significantly relieved the pressure of working part-time while studying, allowing me to fully focus on my studies.

    What do you enjoy most about being on JE's bursary scheme?

    The opportunity to work with a wide range of inspiring people from all kinds of diverse backgrounds. The team at JE is incredibly friendly and approachable and I’ve received guidance and support from colleagues at every level of seniority. You really feel the spirit of collaboration between colleagues to work towards shared goals. Every single day has been completely different and filled with new and exciting challenges.

    What advice would you give to someone considering joining JE's bursary scheme?

    I would encourage anyone considering the scheme to give it a go! I would recommend that all university students should actively seek relevant work experiences during holidays, which can often be challenging to find. JE’s bursary scheme not only provides financial support for studies but also offers guaranteed paid work experience. Even if unsuccessful in their application, the process itself will support you when is comes to applying to other roles and positions. I had personal experience from other jobs, but this scheme has built on that and I strongly recommend it!

    What are you studying and where? 

    I’m a second year student at Oxford University reading Materials Science (MEng) at Corpus Christi College.

    How have you benefitted from work experience with JE?

    The hands on experience I’ve received from working at JE has been invaluable. I’ve been compiling detailed scientific reports which allowed me to harness the theory I’ve learned in my course and apply it to real-world engineering problems. I’ve expanded my knowledge base and sharpened my research skills to dive into data and find answers to critical questions. I’ve also built my confidence in expressing complex ideas to people at every level of understanding. This has put me in fantastic stead to launch my scientific career. I’ve been fortunate to be guided by an experienced mentor who challenged me to think differently when approaching problems. They showed me how to overcome obstacles, structure my thinking and find exciting disco§veries buried in the data.

    How has being a JE bursary student supported your studies?

    My work experience at JE isn’t just confined to my specialist area. There are wide open opportunities to embed myself in every part of the business and join meetings where I can listen, learn and even contribute. This kind of exposure has helped me to discover what I want in my future career. My colleagues have been incredibly supportive throughout my time here, whether I need guidance on how to approach a task or inspiration for my future career. That has really made the experience for me.

    What different teams and roles have you worked in at JE?

    I’ve spent a considerable time with the New Product Development team where I learned the end-to-end process of launching a new product; from market research to user testing and assurance. Lately, I’ve been working with Asset Management. I’ve completed scientific reports on the utility assets that are used to supply power to Jersey. It’s been fascinating to learn how the theory I’ve learned in my degree can be applied to real world situations.

    What do you like about work experience with JE?

    I think it’s been the opportunity to meet sharp, passionate people who are further along the career ladder with insights on how I can advance my professional career. Also, the sheer breadth of experience I’ve gained from exploring different career paths in diverse areas of the business, so I could understand how the entire jigsaw fits together. It really feels like JE are one team with a relaxed atmosphere and friendly welcome wherever I went.

    When you have completed your studies, what do you hope to do next?

    I’m exploring my options and getting as much exposure as I can to the professional world. Working with JE has inspired me to strive for a career in scientific research and their mission to transform Jersey into a carbon zero Island has focused my sights on investigating solutions to combat climate change.

Daily Service Charge

The Daily Service Charge covers energy support services such as metering, billing, Customer Care, safety obligations and other energy support services.

Off-peak

Off-peak means not at the most popular time. Some of our tariffs provide discounted rates at off-peak times - for example, during certain periods at night.

Our current off peak electric vehicles times are from 00:00 to 06:59.

Dedicated supply circuit

A dedicated supply circuit is an electrical circuit that is set aside for a specific purpose, such as powering a boiler. It will work with a single appliance only.

It will have its own circuit breaker in your fuse box, and no other device or appliance will be able to draw power from it. A dedicated supply circuit ensures that appliances can draw the current they need without overloading your system, blowing a fuse or tripping an electric circuit.

Peak Load

Peak load or peak demand is a short period when the demand for electricity is at its highest.

Kilowatt Hours

Electricity consumption is usually measured in kilowatt hours, or kWh for short. Each kWh of electricity equates to 'one unit of electricity' for billing purposes. A 1kW (1,000 Watts) appliance in use for one hour = 1kWh (one unit). The cost per unit used depends on which tariff you are on.

Three phase

Residential homes are usually served by a single-phase power supply, while commercial and industrial facilities usually use a three-phase supply.

One difference between single-phase and three-phase is that a three-phase power supply better accommodates higher loads. Single-phase power supplies are most commonly used when typical loads are lighting or heating, rather than large electric motors.

Another important difference between 3-phase power and single phase power is the consistency of power delivery. Because of the variations in voltage, single-phase power supply does not offer the same consistency as a three-phase power supply. A three-phase power supply delivers power at a steady, constant rate.

kVA

A kVA is simply 1,000 volt-amps. A volt-amp, or ampere, (VA) is the voltage times the current feeding an electrical load.

Embedded generator

Embedded generators like wind turbines and solar panels are connected to your electricity supply and provide electricity for onsite use. They also have the capability to export back to the grid.

Smart Card Number

Your Smart Card Number is the 19-digit number displayed below the barcode on your Smart Card.

The Smart Card Number also contains your six-digit Meter Number that is also displayed on your meter. You need this to top up a Smart Pay As You Go Meter whether at a Payzone outlet or online.

Smart Card

A Smart Card contains your unique Smart Card Number used when topping up a Smart Pay As You Go Meter.

F-Credit

F-credit is a Pay As You Go meter display and means Friendly Credit. It is the period between 9pm and 8am. If the credit on your meter runs out during this period, your supply will remain on until 8am.

Decarbonise

The process of reducing carbon by replacing fossil fuels with fuel that is less harmful to the environment such as low-carbon electricity.

Regenerative braking

With conventional braking systems, the kinetic energy that was propelling the vehicle forward gets converted to unwanted and wasted heat by the friction of the brakes.

Regenerative braking recaptures much of the car's kinetic energy and converts it into electricity, so that it can be used to recharge the car's batteries.

In addition to improving the efficiency of a vehicle, regeneration can significantly extend the life of the braking system, as the mechanical parts will not wear out as quickly.

Power factor

Power factor is the ratio of useful power in kilowatts (kW) to apparent power, measured in kilovolt amperes (kVA). A perfect power factor would be 1.0, however in reality this is almost impossible to achieve. Office buildings are usually between 0.98 and 0.92. Bad power factor is anything below 0.85.

Electric flow boiler

Electric flow boilers are simple to install, quiet in operation, 100% efficient and integrate into most existing radiator or underfloor piped systems. Plus, with no flue or storage tank, an electric boiler is a space-saving option that can be installed almost anywhere in your home.

A heating system, approved by Jersey Electricity, on a dedicated supply for use on one of our discounted heating tariffs.

20-digit payment code

The 20-digit payment code is issued with your receipt for a Pay As You Go (PAYG) meter top-up. If your meter did not charge automatically, you can do it manually with the payment code. Press button A on your meter then key in your 20-digit payment confirmation code on the meter keypad, then press button B. Your meter will recognise the amount paid and charge accordingly.

Single phase

Single-phase power supplies are most commonly used when typical loads are lighting or heating, as in a domestic home, rather than large electric motors and higher loads. Single-phase power is a two-wire alternating current (AC) power circuit.
